Issues That Matter

As a teacher it is your job to address issues, and teach your students the proper way to do that. With that being said when issues or sensitive matters become present in a class room or just in life in general we must address them accordingly. A big factor in doing this properly is generating conversation and allowing students to feel comfortable expressing their own opinions and feelings on the matter. For example, if a student doesn't agree with the topic at hand and they don't feel like they have the authority to speak up and generate a conversation about said topic, they may resent the class or teacher in general. Like Video 6, from the module this week, we should actively try and have our students talk and discuss issues that they feel they can provide a say in. In return the students will learn to feel comfortable and be able to express their own thoughts. Another key factor in being able to talk abut issues that matter is, we must not beat around the bush and stay in our comfort zone when talking abut a matter. Practicing talking abut uncomfortable matters that students may not necessarily want to talk about is important in conversation civilly. Civil conversation is one of the most important skills we can learn as humans in order to function in a society with each other, and therefore should be encouraged when working with students.

  1. How does the fishbowl discussion method promote leaving a student's comfort zone in an effective way? Personally it makes me feel like the people are in the center of attention. If the students are to nervous on the side lines then they will never tap in, since they are literally surrounded.

    1. I totally get where you are coming from, I believe that using topics that every student can relate to would certainly allow the students on the sidelines to provide their input. I also think that a teacher should facilitate these conversations by making sure each student has spoken without pushing the student's boundaries, therefore allowing each student to get an opportunity.
