The Effect of Gender in Teaching
It is certainly not a surprise at least to me that like other professions gender effects the teaching profession. For example, the teaching profession is typically and predominantly filled with women, and this is the case because laws were put into place, years ago discriminated women against many work places and jobs. This led to women seeking other professions such as teaching. Another reason I think the teaching profession is predominantly a female role is because women are seen as nurturing and supportive and as we know that is a key part of being a teacher. Decades ago men would go off to work while the women would stay at home and take care of the house and kids. I think this combined with the laws that were put in place for where women could work have a big impact on gender roles n teachers and staff today. This is obviously a stereotypical thought however throughout history this stereotype is prevalent and therefore supports why gender effects the teaching profession. As a current and former student, I have always mainly had female teachers, and probably encountered a handful of male teacher in elementary through high school. The only school staff members that were male were typically coaches, and the principle and even then that was kind of rare. I think this needs to change and the teaching profession needs to be broadened especially when it comes to having a diverse staff that every student can find comfort in. Teachers should come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors, and with that students will be able to learn in a diverse environment and each student can feel comfortable.
