Segregation in Schooling

This week's module really opened my eyes to the segregation that is still very much happening in today's school system. This is partially to blame due to how school systems are located and the lack of resources particular schools have. I became more aware of the fact that racism and segregation is very much prominent and present in our society and especially in our schooling. We see this due to the fact that schools with a heavy population of children in poverty or low-income families are not given the proper resources they need to thrive and grow. While these schools receive less than what they need to thrive, other schools with wealthy students in "good" areas of town are given more than enough resources they need to learn and grow. With that being said, it should be a main goal for school administration to put an end to this and supply each and every school with what they need to thrive. I was also surprised about the percentage and amount of segregation that is ...

The Role Money Plays in Schooling

Money has many roles in the school system. Examples of this can be how certain students are treated based on their social class, funding for Teachers, and the ability for students and teachers to have all of the resources they need. To start we will go more into detail on how students of different social classes receive different help and support from school staff. Students of lower class families typically are provided more resources then just what happens in the class room, some may receive discounted or free lunches and breakfast, or the books they need may be given to them rather than have to be payed for, and help can even go as far as giving students the resources they need over the weekends. This is very important as not every student is given a solid home life to feel comfortable enough at school to actually learn and grow. Another example of the role money has is the proper funding for teachers. This is important because without the correct funding teachers will not be ab...

The Lengths I am Willing to go

The lengths I would be willing to go through in order to do right by every single student is drastic and lengthy just like every teacher should. I think it is important to fight for what you believe in, and students should be a priority we as teachers fight for. For example, in this week's module we learn about all the prejudice and discrimination students face in school. In Texas Governor Greg Abbott passed a law to make it legal for teachers to essentially ban transgender students from certain spaces and activities. This kind of prejudice is something that teachers should see and chose not to participate in. While this would be considered illegal it is not something that should be rightfully followed because of the hurt it produces.                Decades ago discrimination and prejudice against students was vary vast as we all know, especially when it came to segregating black people from white people in shared p...

The Effect of Gender in Teaching

It is certainly not a surprise at least to me that like other professions gender effects the teaching profession. For example, the teaching profession is typically and predominantly filled with women, and this is the case because laws were put into place, years ago discriminated women against many work places and jobs. This led to women seeking other professions such as teaching. Another reason I think the teaching profession is predominantly a female role is because women are seen as nurturing and supportive and as we know that is a key part of being a teacher. Decades ago men would go off to work while the women would stay at home and take care of the house and kids. I think this combined with the laws that were put in place for where women could work have a big impact on gender roles n teachers and staff today. This is obviously a stereotypical thought however throughout history this stereotype is prevalent and therefore supports why gender effects the teaching profession. As a ...

The Greatest Impact

First off, I would like to start off by saying I really enjoy this class so far and it has opened my eyes to the importance of how you not only instruct your students but how to be a supportive figure in their lives and allow them to reach their full potential. Module 5 had the greatest impact on me as an educator because it allowed me to see that teachers are not just educators but figures who will guide the incoming generations to their upmost abilities. In the article from this module, "Facing History and Ourselves" it explains how conversation can greatly benefit a student by not only improving their knowledge and understanding of each other but as well as student's wellbeing. The website was created to suggest new methods, strategies, and thought processes in the classroom, for example it says, "Engaging in civil discourse means bringing your mind, heart, and conscience to reflective conversations on topics that matter, in ways that allow you to extend your un...

Marginalized Stories

When it comes to schooling and the students who have been marginalized and pushed to the side in society and the classroom it is very widespread. Throughout history if you weren't a straight, white, male, you would not be treated with the same respect in school. The thought of this truly breaks my heart, especially since this marginalization is still going on today.  Many students who have been marginalized are people of color, specifically black people. Segregation was strictly enforced in schools, seperating the white kids from the black kids. This changed after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 when it was ruled that racial segregation in public schools was illegal. While this certainly changed the trajectory for marginalized student, it makes you wonder if private educational institutes still enforced these horrendous racially inspired crimes. Another story of marginalization in the school system would be the mistreatment to the mentally disabled, or developmentally del...

Issues That Matter

As a teacher it is your job to address issues, and teach your students the proper way to do that. With that being said when issues or sensitive matters become present in a class room or just in life in general we must address them accordingly. A big factor in doing this properly is generating conversation and allowing students to feel comfortable expressing their own opinions and feelings on the matter. For example, if a student doesn't agree with the topic at hand and they don't feel like they have the authority to speak up and generate a conversation about said topic, they may resent the class or teacher in general. Like Video 6, from the module this week, we should actively try and have our students talk and discuss issues that they feel they can provide a say in. In return the students will learn to feel comfortable and be able to express their own thoughts. Another key factor in being able to talk abut issues that matter is, we must not beat around the bush and stay in ou...
